Season Lava Rocks
How to Season Lava Rock:

Caution: Lava rocks may react to heat by throwing fragments of rock. Be sure to season the lava rocks at a high temperature in order to avoid potential personal injury.

  1. Place a single layer of lava rocks on the grate of your gas grill before you begin heating.

  2. Following the instructions from your grill, light the fire.

  3. Close the lid and set the grill temperature to maximum heat.

  4. Allow the lava rocks to heat at maximum temperature for 30 minutes.

  5. Do not open the lid while the lava rocks are seasoning.

Plant in Lava Rock
How to Plant in Lava Rock:

Lava rock is a great mulch replacement for flower beds.  It keeps moisture in the ground but will not rot, decay or be subject to color fade like other wood mulches. It also insulates the ground from heat and cold. Studies show that lava rock is more effective in retaining moisture and reducing evaporation of moisture in topsoil, than wood mulch products.  Use lava rock in your flower beds and watch your plants thrive!

  1. Remove 2” of soil, including weeds, grass, and debris, in the flower bed.

  2. Use back of rake to smooth and even out the remaining soil.

  3. Cover area with a non-woven landscape fabric for extra weed protection.

  4. Cut slits in fabric to slide over any trees, shrubs, and plants located in the flower bed.   For larger plants or trees, cut slits from the edge in order to fit around the full diameter.

  5. Secure the fabric down using yard staples in each corner.   Be sure to staple anywhere your fabric overlaps.

  6. Place 2” of FloweRock™ Lava Rock over the landscape fabric.  Leave about 3” of space between the stones and base of your plants.

  7. Water plants as usual and enjoy your freshly landscaped flower bed!

Soil Additive
Lava Rock as a Soil Additive
SOIL AMENDMENT

Lava products are a popular rock material used in landscaping and as a soil additive. The small sand and pebble sized products are an excellent, high-energy soil amendment (although it has an analysis of less than 1-1-1). Use some around plants and you'll see how irrelevant it is to worry about pH; the pH of lava sand is more than 8. Lava sand makes soil nutrients more available to plant roots.

WATER PERCOLATION

Lava products also increase the water-holding capacity of the soil while separating heavy clay particles, thus improving water percolation from the surface.

DIFFERENT USES

Home gardeners and professional crop growers of bonsai trees, orchids, roses, and even turf, have discovered how powerful it is in an organic program. Lava products can be used in potting soils and bed preparation for all landscaping, plant, and food crops. Lava products can also be used to top dress new sod installations at a rate of 40 - 80 pounds per 1000 square feet or at a heavier rate for flower beds at 80 - 150 pounds per 1000 square feet. Lava products can also be used in seed-germinating trays and pots.

PARAMAGNETIC FORCE

Although there is some controversy on this subject, lava products are said to have high paramagnetic qualities. Paramagnetism as a force has been studied for about a century in academia, but it has only been in the past decade that an association was found between this force and increased plant vitality. The science of paramagnetism and its usefulness for helping farmers, as well as greenhouse operators and homeowners, has been steadily growing over the past decade. Paramagnetism is a force that is found naturally in rock. Some types of granite, and especially lava rock products, contain inherently high levels of paramagnetism. Pilot experiments have been shown to increase plant growth, but even more importantly, increase plant vitality to the point where insects and disease no longer attack or infect the plant. For this reason, insecticide and fungicide use is reduced or no longer necessary when utilizing paramagnetic lava products. Paramagnetism can be measured by a device that has been modified from a more expensive model made in England. It is this inexpensive model, invented by three individuals and sold out of an engineering laboratory in Maine that is used in agriculture today.

Gas Grills Fireplaces
GAS FIREPLACES
When it comes to gas fireplaces, lava rock is most popularly used as an additive to the base of gas logs; this helps to enhance the wood burning fireplace look and ambiance. Products come in three colors: black, brownish black, and deep red. Available sizes range from 1/4” to 2”. We produce these products for several major fireplace manufacturers all over the United States and Canada.
Lava Rock for Gas Grills & Fireplaces
GAS FIRE PITS
Gas fire pits have become extremely popular in recent years, starting in California and moving East. These outdoor pits use gas rings with lava rock as the filler. Available sizes also range from 1/4” to 2” and in colors of deep red, brownish, mesita, and black.
GAS GRILL USES
Our lava rock can also be used in gas barbecue grills to control flare, smoke production, heat distribution, and better control temperature. Most new grills control these attributes minimally and the addition of lava to today’s grills will enhance your grilling experience. The lava for this application is available in 1” to 2” nuggets.
